Leather Football Helmet

Picture
The first leather football helmet or "Head-Harness" was invented by a shoemaker in 1893. Admiral Joseph Mason Reeves was told by his doctor that another kick to the head would give him instant insanity or maybe death. So Reeves asked a shoe maker to make him a helmet, so he did. Even though the football helmet was invented, up till 1915 most players didn't wear a helmet. Just around the time where players started to wear football helmets, flaps for the ears were added for better communication and maneuverability. In 1939 the NCAA made football helmets mandatory. Unfortunately, still many professionals didn't wear football helmets. If it wasn't for that shoemaker people may still be getting head injuries constantly.
